Path to Independence

In Gairy's independence speech to Grenada's Parliament that day, he called for peace with the opposition parties. But Maurice Bishop lay in a jail cell at the time, still grieving the murder of his father two weeks earlier. The labor strikes continued and Carnival 1974 was cancelled. It was only a matter of time before Gairy's hold on this new country would be broken completely.
